Choose an Atlantic country you have not studied yet. Research and find the “original” or earliest civilization/cultural group that lived there.

Find a blank map of the country-make two copies just like you had for Canada. Draw, label and color one map that is the current territories/states and one map should have the territories of the “original” civilization or cultural groups that lived there.

Research and record for both the original civilization and now (make a t chart to compare information)

what are the physical features of the land (mountains, lakes, deserts, etc.)

What is the climate?

Weather

Housing types according to geographic region

Food and food production (hunter, agriculture)

Clothing types

Today we will continue to explore how to read a map using longitude and latitude. Please follow the directions to find your house, the school, Estevan, 2 countries you have researched or are interested in and their capital city. Describe the location using degrees, minutes and seconds (DMS): 41°24’12.2″N 2°10’26.5″E. What is the location of the example.

Post your answers of the DMS of Estevan and the two countries as well as their capital cities to your blog under your Social Studies tab along with a short comparison to how this is different from looking up a location on a physical (paper) map (do not post the coordinates of your house or the school). Include a response to how this is different from how we give people directions verbally to find a specific location.

Reading a map is not unlike reading a book. In both it is necessary to know the meaning of the words and symbols. When we read books we construct a deeper meaning when we combine the words into sentences and thoughts. The same thing is true when we read a map. For example, when you read a map and you see the symbol for railroad crossing and then see a symbol for city you will know that the railway runs through that city.

Find a map of a country bordering the Atlantic ocean with symbols and a key for those symbols on it. Then write a pictogram (a story using pictures) about an adventure that could have happened using that map and key.

See Mrs. Schroeder’s example in class for further clarification.

This pictogram is due on Monday, December 1.

If you finish or have some free time, try this awesome game site and see if you can beat 99 seconds to for the Europe Map Match. Try the other Map Games as well…see which you like the best.

Choose a country bordering the Atlantic ocean (Dominican Republic, Spain, France, Ireland, Iceland, Portugal, Argenina, Chile, Guinea, Haiti, South Africa, Trinidad, Tobago, Congo, etc.) and research a cultural tradition or festival from that country. Make a post card that features a picture of the tradition or festival and include the following information:

  • What country have you chosen?
  • Where is this country in the world (include an image and be sure to give credit to the internet source)?
  • What is the title of the tradition or festival?
  • How did this tradition or festival begin?
  • What happens?
  • Where does it take place in the country?
  • Why is it celebrated
  • Who are the people involved?
  • What is the historical or cultural significance?
  • What other cultural groups or societies have influenced this culture or tradition?

When you have finished your research be sure that you have recorded the web urls that you visited to get the information and the date that you went to the website to retrieve the information.

November 14, 2014-

Please be sure to discuss this with your families this weekend. Your writing and visual representation will be due on Tuesday, November 18. Please have a hand drawn component, you may use digital photos or images if choose along with the hand drawn images or pictures.

What is a family tradition that you have that you really love? Describe this tradition with details using sentences and draw pictures. Please consider:

  • What values does this represent?
  • How does this show what you personally believe?
  • Where does this tradition come from?
  • When does your family practice this tradition?
  • How does it make you feel?
  • Is there anyone else you know that practices this tradition?
  • Does it relate to the community?

November 3, 2014.
Please go to the Legacy of Hope web page and answer the questions about this website and residential schools.

When you have answered all of the questions please write a personal reflection on your Social Studies page of your blog considering:

Write a personal reflection about how your education is different from that of a residential school.
1. How do you think your family and future generations of any group of people would be if more people were subjected to the conditions of the negative experiences some people had at residential schools?
2. Do you think it was right or wrong for young children to be taken away from their families because their culture was different than the culture in power?
3. Is there any way for the wrong doings that happened in some residential schools to be made right? Please justify your responses with specific examples.

Dynamic Relationships 6.1-March 20

Our last task with this outcome is to investigate ways in which natural environments are reflected in artistic expression such as music, dance, painting and sculpture.  We are going to use our wiki countries for this task:

1.  Find two examples of any of the genres of artistic expression (music, dance, painting or sculpture).

2.  You are going to post your two examples on your wiki page using the title: Artistic Expression

3.  You MUST have a source for each example.

4.  You also need to include a short 2-5 sentences explanation of why you think these art reflects the natural environment of your county.

Dynamic Relationships 6.1- February 3

Our next focus in social studies is going to be considering how natural environments impact our ways of life.  I would like you to consider how our natural environment here is Saskatchewan impacts our way of life. Then I would like you to consider how the natural environment in the country you are studying impacts the way of life for the people who live there.  Consider things like housing, activities, jobs, recreation, transportation etc.

On your blog on your social studies page, I would like you to answer the following questions in paragraph form.

1. Describe the geography of Estevan, Saskatchewan (for example climate, vegetation and landforms).

2.  How does our natural environment impact our way of life in Saskatchewan?  You should have at least 3-5 ideas.

3.  How does the natural environment of your wiki country impact the way of life for the people in that country? You should have at least 3-5 ideas.
